Responsibilities:
- Carry a 2.17.4 legal appointment as per the MHSA (Safety Manager)
- Develop and implement safety policies and procedures in accordance with industry regulations and best practices.
- Create and maintain an effective safety management system that identifies and minimizes potential hazards and risks in the mining operations.
- Conduct regular safety inspections and audits to identify non-compliance and recommend corrective actions to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Train and educate employees on safety protocols, equipment operation, emergency response, and hazard recognition.
- Lead incident investigations to identify root causes and develop preventive measures to avoid future occurrences.
- Collaborate with operational teams to develop action plans for resolving safety-related issues and achieving safety goals.
- Monitor and analyze safety performance metrics to identify trends and areas for improvement.
- Keep abreast of changes in safety laws, regulations, and technologies, and ensure compliance across the organization.
- Conduct safety meetings and presentations to promote safety awareness and encourage employee participation in safety initiatives.
- Coordinate with external agencies, such as government regulatory bodies, to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, near misses, and corrective actions, and produce timely reports for management review.
- Stay updated with industry best practices and emerging safety technologies to enhance the safety program of the organization.
- Lead and support safety campaigns and initiatives to create a safety-conscious culture throughout the organization.
- Provide guidance and support to different departments in the development and implementation of safety improvement projects.
- Act as the main point of contact for all safety-related matters within the mining operations.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
- Proven experience in a safety management role within the mining industry, preferably in an underground mining environment.
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Familiarity with mining-specific hazards and risks, such as rock falls, mine gases, equipment operations, and confined spaces.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with employees at all levels.
- Proficient in conducting safety audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.
- Ability to develop and deliver training programs on safety topics.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess safety risks and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Familiarity with safety management systems, such as ISO 45001, and their implementation.
- Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software.
- Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within the mining operations as required.
- Professional certification in occupational health and safety, such as NEBOSH, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of local mining regulations and legislative requirements in South Africa will be an advantage.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment.
- Highly organized with excellent time management skills to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
