Job Description
Our client, a leading consulting engineering firm in Johannesburg, is seeking a talented professional to join their dynamic team in the role of an Electrical Engineer specializing in Power Systems Studies
Requirements:
- Design of transmission and distribution switching stations and substations (11 kV to 500 kV).
- Substation Primary Plant design
- Earthing design using CDEGS.
- Lighting design using Relux and Dialux (including 3D model development in CAD for import).
- Lightning Protection design using CDEGS and Electro Geometric Modelling (3D modelling in SES Shield).
- EMF calculations and modelling in CDEGS.
- Corona, Noise, and RFI calculations using EPRI methods and CDEGS modelling.
- Short Circuit Forces calculations using international standards (MathCAD experience is an advantage).
- Compilation of Bills of Materials (BOMs), reports, and engineering calculations.
- Development of Primary Plant Equipment technical specifications and schedules.
- Supervision and leadership of small teams, including Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, and Graduates.
- Guidance and mentorship for Technicians and Graduate Engineers in relevant software applications.
- Reviewing and assessing the work of team members to ensure quality and accuracy.
Educational Requirements:
- BEng/BSc/BTech in Electrical Engineering (Preference for specialization in Power Systems Studies).
- Professional Registration with ECSA (Essential).
Experience:
- Minimum 6 years of practical experience in the electrical/consulting industry, including the mining industry.
- At least 3 years’ experience in Power System Studies (PowerFactory, ETAP, CDEGS).
- Strong understanding of substation equipment, structures, busbars, cables, and conductors (up to 500 kV).
- Basic renewable energy design experience.
- LV and Secondary Plant experience (Advantageous).
- Overhead line design experience in PLS-CADD (Advantageous).
- Project management skills, including proficiency in MS Projects.
- Proficiency in EMT simulation and network simulation software (PowerFactory, ETAP, PSSE, PSCAD).
- Experience in conducting various power system studies, including:
- Grid Code Compliance
- Grid Impact Studies
- Transmission Planning Studies
- Insulation Coordination
- Switching Studies
- Power Quality Studies
- EMTP, Transient & Dynamic Performance Studies
- Small Signal Analysis & Forensic Studies
